Statement

Let RR be a commutative ring, let (fk)(f_k) and (gk)(g_k) be sequences in RR, and let m≤nm \le n be integers. Write Δfk=fk+1−fk\Delta f_k = f_{k+1} - f_k and Δgk=gk+1−gk\Delta g_k = g_{k+1} - g_k for the forward differences. Then ∑k=mnfk Δgk=fn+1gn+1−fmgm−∑k=mngk+1 Δfk.\sum_{k=m}^{n} f_k\, \Delta g_k = f_{n+1} g_{n+1} - f_m g_m - \sum_{k=m}^{n} g_{k+1}\, \Delta f_k.

Remarks

The product rule for differences is Δ(fg)k=fkΔgk+gk+1Δfk\Delta(f g)_k = f_k \Delta g_k + g_{k+1} \Delta f_k, which one checks by expanding. Summing it from k=mk = m to nn, the left side telescopes to fn+1gn+1−fmgmf_{n+1} g_{n+1} - f_m g_m, and this gives the formula. A common form, often called the Abel transformation, uses partial sums Ak=a1+⋯+akA_k = a_1 + \dots + a_k: ∑k=1nakbk=Anbn−∑k=1n−1Ak(bk+1−bk).\sum_{k=1}^{n} a_k b_k = A_n b_n - \sum_{k=1}^{n-1} A_k (b_{k+1} - b_k). Example: with fk=kf_k = k and gk=2kg_k = 2^k, Δgk=2k\Delta g_k = 2^k and the formula gives ∑k=0nk 2k=(n+1)2n+1−∑k=0n2k+1=(n−1)2n+1+2\sum_{k=0}^{n} k\, 2^k = (n+1) 2^{n+1} - \sum_{k=0}^{n} 2^{k+1} = (n - 1) 2^{n+1} + 2. For n=2n = 2 both sides equal 1010.

Going deeper

For a student

The Abel form is the key step in Dirichlet's test and Abel's test for the convergence of series ∑akbk\sum a_k b_k. In Dirichlet's test, bounded partial sums AkA_k and monotone bkb_k tending to 00 make the right side converge. Its continuous-variable version is Abel's summation formula, used in analytic number theory. In the calculus of finite differences it is proved from the fundamental theorem of the calculus of finite differences applied to the product fgf g.
