Definition
Let be an integer and let be a real number. Let be the set of real polynomials of the form where is any real polynomial of degree at most . The Zolotarev polynomial is the element of with the least value of .
Remarks
The minimiser exists and is unique. Indeed , where and is the best approximation of in the uniform norm on by polynomials of degree at most .
Example: for the Zolotarev polynomial is , where is the Chebyshev polynomial. Check: is monic, its coefficient of is because is even or odd, and no monic polynomial of degree has a smaller maximum on .
Non-example: for and , the polynomial lies in but is not . Its maximum on is , while has maximum .
Some authors normalise the second coefficient as instead of ; the family of polynomials is the same.
