Multiplicity of a root

Builds on Root of a polynomialDegree of a polynomial

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring, let f∈R[x]f \in R[x] with f≠0f \neq 0 and let c∈Rc \in R. The multiplicity of cc as a root of ff is the largest integer m≥0m \ge 0 such that (x−c)m(x - c)^m divides ff.

Remarks

The integer mm exists, because (x−c)m(x - c)^m is monic of degree mm, so it cannot divide ff for m>deg⁡fm > \deg f. The multiplicity is positive exactly when cc is a root of ff. A root of multiplicity 11 is a simple root. A root of multiplicity at least 22 is a repeated root. In ℚ[x]\mathbb{Q}[x], f=(x−1)3(x+2)f = (x - 1)^3 (x + 2) has the root 11 with multiplicity 33 and the root −2-2 with multiplicity 11.
