Upper triangular matrix

Builds on Square matrix

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let n≥0n \ge 0 be an integer. A square matrix U=(uij)U = (u_{ij}) of order nn over RR is upper triangular when uij=0u_{ij} = 0 for all i>ji > j. It is strictly upper triangular when uij=0u_{ij} = 0 for all i≥ji \ge j.

Remarks

Sums and products of upper triangular matrices of the same order are upper triangular. The determinant of a triangular matrix is the product of its diagonal entries. The diagonal entries of an upper triangular matrix over a field are its eigenvalues. A system Ux=bUx = b with UU upper triangular and invertible is solved by back substitution.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
