Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Proposition
Trace is linear
Builds on Trace of a matrix
Statement
Let be a commutative ring, let and be matrices over , and let . Then and , where is the trace.
Remarks
Thus the trace is a linear map from to . Both identities follow at once from the definition, because the diagonal of is the sum of the diagonals. Over a field, the trace is a linear form on the vector space of matrices.
