Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Theorem

Exponential of a sum of commuting matrices

Builds on Matrix exponential

Statement

Let ๐•‚\mathbb{K} be โ„\R or โ„‚\C, and let AA and BB be nร—nn \times n matrices over ๐•‚\mathbb{K} with AB=BAAB = BA. Then eA+B=eAeB,e^{A + B} = e^A e^B, where eAe^A is the matrix exponential.

Remarks

The proof multiplies the two series and uses the binomial formula, which needs AB=BAAB = BA. It gives eAeโˆ’A=Ine^A e^{-A} = I_n, so eAe^A is always invertible. Without AB=BAAB = BA, the identity can fail, for example for A=(0100)A = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} and B=(0010)B = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 0 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}.
