Block diagonal matrix

Builds on Block matrix

Definition

Let RR be a ring and let A1,…,AkA_1, \dots, A_k be square matrices over RR, where AiA_i has order nin_i. The block diagonal matrix diag⁡(A1,…,Ak)\operatorname{diag}(A_1, \dots, A_k) is the block matrix of order n1+⋯+nkn_1 + \cdots + n_k (A10⋯00A2⋯0⋮⋮⋱⋮00⋯Ak),\begin{pmatrix} A_1 & 0 & \cdots & 0 \\ 0 & A_2 & \cdots & 0 \\ \vdots & \vdots & \ddots & \vdots \\ 0 & 0 & \cdots & A_k \end{pmatrix}, whose block in position (i,i)(i, i) is AiA_i. The other blocks are zero matrices.

Remarks

This matrix is also called the direct sum A1⊕⋯⊕AkA_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus A_k. Products of block diagonal matrices with matching block sizes are computed block by block. Over a commutative ring, det⁡diag⁡(A1,…,Ak)=det⁡A1⋯det⁡Ak\det \operatorname{diag}(A_1, \dots, A_k) = \det A_1 \cdots \det A_k. The Jordan normal form is a block diagonal matrix of Jordan blocks.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
