Higher partial derivatives
Builds on Partial derivative
Definition
Let be open, let , and let . Suppose that the partial derivative exists at each point of . The second partial derivative of with respect to and then at is when this partial derivative exists. It is also written or . For , one writes . By induction, a partial derivative of order is a partial derivative of a partial derivative of order : .
Remarks
In the variable nearest to is differentiated first. In the variable written first is differentiated first. For , one gets , and . If the second partial derivatives are continuous, then the order of differentiation does not matter, by Schwarz's theorem. Without continuity, the mixed partial derivatives can differ. The second partial derivatives at a point form the Hessian matrix.
