Differential form

Builds on C^k function characterised by continuous derivatives

Definition

Let U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n be open, and let 0≤k≤n0 \le k \le n. Take a multi-index I=(i1,…,ik)I = (i_1, \dots, i_k) with 1≤i1<⋯<ik≤n1 \le i_1 < \dots < i_k \le n. Let dxIdx_I be the function of kk vectors v1,…,vk∈ℝnv_1, \dots, v_k \in \mathbb{R}^n given by dxI(v1,…,vk)=det⁡[(vj)il]l,j=1k,dx_I(v_1, \dots, v_k) = \det \big[ (v_j)_{i_l} \big]_{l, j = 1}^{k}, the determinant of a k×kk \times k matrix. The entry of this matrix in row ll and column jj is the ili_l-th component of vjv_j. A differential kk-form on UU is a sum ω=∑IfI dxI\omega = \sum_I f_I \, dx_I over these multi-indices, where each fI ⁣:U→ℝf_I \colon U \to \mathbb{R} is a function. At x∈Ux \in U, it gives the function ωx(v1,…,vk)=∑IfI(x) dxI(v1,…,vk)\omega_x(v_1, \dots, v_k) = \sum_I f_I(x) \, dx_I(v_1, \dots, v_k).

Remarks

The form is of class CrC^r if all fIf_I are of class C^r. A 00-form is a function, and a 1-form is ∑ifi dxi\sum_i f_i \, dx_i. Each ωx\omega_x is multilinear and alternating: it changes sign when two of the vectors are swapped. The forms dxIdx_I give a basis of such functions, so there are (nk)\binom{n}{k} of them, and no nonzero forms of degree k>nk > n. In the wedge product notation, dxI=dxi1∧⋯∧dxikdx_I = dx_{i_1} \wedge \dots \wedge dx_{i_k}. On ℝ3\mathbb{R}^3, dx∧dy∧dzdx \wedge dy \wedge dz gives the signed volume of the parallelepiped spanned by three vectors. In ℝ3\mathbb{R}^3, 1-forms and 2-forms correspond to vector fields, and 0-forms and 3-forms to functions. The exterior derivative then corresponds to the gradient, curl and divergence.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
