Area-minimizing current

Builds on Integral currentCurrentDifferential formStokes' theorem

Definition

Let 1≤m≤n1 \le m \le n, and let TT be an integral current of dimension mm on ℝn\R^n, with mass 𝐌(T)\mathbf{M}(T) and boundary ∂T\partial T. The current TT is area-minimizing, or mass-minimizing, if 𝐌(T)≤𝐌(S)\mathbf{M}(T) \le \mathbf{M}(S) for every integral mm-current SS on ℝn\R^n with ∂S=∂T\partial S = \partial T.

Remarks

A local version is used for currents in an open set UU. There one compares TT with SS only when T−ST - S is the boundary of an integral current with compact support in UU. For a compact oriented C1C^1 submanifold, the mass of the associated current is its area. So an area-minimizing submanifold has least area among all oriented competitors with the same boundary, smooth or not.

Example: let DD be the closed unit disc in the plane x3=0x_3 = 0 of ℝ3\R^3, oriented by e1∧e2e_1 \wedge e_2, and let ω=dx1∧dx2\omega = dx_1 \wedge dx_2, a closed differential form of comass 11. For every integral 22-current SS with ∂S=∂[ ⁣[D] ⁣]\partial S = \partial [\![D]\!], one has S−[ ⁣[D] ⁣]=∂RS - [\![D]\!] = \partial R for an integral 33-current RR, since every integral cycle in ℝ3\R^3 bounds. Then S(ω)−[ ⁣[D] ⁣](ω)=R(dω)=0S(\omega) - [\![D]\!](\omega) = R(d\omega) = 0 by the definition of the boundary, as in Stokes' theorem. So 𝐌(S)≥S(ω)=[ ⁣[D] ⁣](ω)=π=𝐌([ ⁣[D] ⁣])\mathbf{M}(S) \ge S(\omega) = [\![D]\!](\omega) = \pi = \mathbf{M}([\![D]\!]), and [ ⁣[D] ⁣][\![D]\!] is area-minimizing.

Non-example: the upper unit hemisphere, oriented so that its boundary is ∂[ ⁣[D] ⁣]\partial [\![D]\!], has mass 2π>π2\pi > \pi, so it is not area-minimizing.
