Double integral
Definition
Let with and , and let be bounded. Choose partitions and , and let with area . For points , the sum is a Riemann sum of . The function is Riemann integrable on if there is with the following property. For each there is such that for all such sums whose rectangles have diameter less than . Then is the double integral of over , written or .
Remarks
Each continuous function on is Riemann integrable on . For a bounded region , one integrates over , where is on and elsewhere. This gives integrals over non-rectangular regions. In practice one computes double integrals as iterated integrals, by Fubini's theorem. For example, . The integral is linear in , and is the area of .
