Centre of mass
Builds on Triple integralDouble integral
Definition
Let be a bounded Jordan measurable set, and let be a continuous density with total mass . The centre of mass of with density is the point with If is constant, is the centroid of , and it does not depend on the value of the constant.
Remarks
For the integrals are triple integrals, and for a plane lamina, , they are double integrals. For point masses at , the centre of mass is . The definition above replaces the sum by an integral. Example: the half disc with constant density has centroid . If and are symmetric under a reflection, then lies in the mirror of that reflection.
