Definition
Let be the Schwartz space and the space of tempered distributions, with pairing . Let be a measurable kernel and let be the integral transform . Let be the transform with the transposed kernel, . Assume that and map continuously into . The transform of is the tempered distribution given by
Remarks
The definition agrees with the integral on Schwartz functions: for , Fubini's theorem gives , when the double integral converges absolutely. Example: the Fourier transform has the symmetric kernel , so maps onto . For the Dirac delta at , , so . Non-example: the kernel on does not qualify, since for the Schwartz function the integral diverges, so is not defined at .
