Schwartz space
Definition
The Schwartz space is the set of smooth functions such that for all multi-indices . Its elements are called Schwartz functions or rapidly decreasing functions. With the family of seminorms , the space is a Fréchet space.
Remarks
Example: the Gaussian is a Schwartz function. Each derivative is a polynomial times , and a polynomial times is bounded on . Every test function on is a Schwartz function. Non-example: on is smooth, but while . The space is closed under differentiation, under multiplication by polynomials and under the Fourier transform, which is a bijection of onto itself. Equivalently, is a Schwartz function if and only if is bounded for every and every .
