Koebe's theorem on the mean value property

Builds on Converse of the mean value propertyMean value propertyHarmonic functionContinuous functionPoisson integral formula

Statement

Let U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \R^n be an open set and let u ⁣:U→ℝu \colon U \to \R be continuous. Assume that for every x∈Ux \in U there is ρ(x)>0\rho(x) > 0 such that u(x)=1∣∂B(x,r)∣∫∂B(x,r)u dSfor all 0<r<ρ(x),u(x) = \frac{1}{\abs{\partial B(x, r)}} \int_{\partial B(x, r)} u \, dS \quad \text{for all } 0 < r < \rho(x), where ∣∂B(x,r)∣\abs{\partial B(x, r)} is the area of the sphere ∂B(x,r)\partial B(x, r). Then uu is harmonic on UU.

Remarks

The radius ρ(x)\rho(x) may depend on the point, so the mean value property is only asked for small spheres; this strengthens the converse of the mean value property. Proof idea: fix a ball BB with closure in UU, and let hh be the harmonic function on BB with boundary values uu given by the Poisson integral formula. The difference v=u−hv = u - h is continuous on B‾\overline{B}, vanishes on ∂B\partial B, and has the local mean value property inside BB. Suppose vv had a positive maximum mm, and choose a point xx of the compact set {v=m}\set{v = m} farthest from the centre of BB. On each small sphere about xx, v≤mv \le m, with v<mv < m on an open piece of the sphere. So the average is less than m=v(x)m = v(x), a contradiction. The same applies to −v-v, so v=0v = 0 and u=hu = h is harmonic on BB. Example: for u(x)=∣x∣2−nu(x) = \abs{x}^{2-n} on U=ℝn∖{0}U = \R^n \setminus \set{0} with n≥3n \ge 3, one may take ρ(x)=∣x∣\rho(x) = \abs{x}. The mean value property on these spheres follows from the potential of a uniform spherical shell, and the theorem then shows that uu is harmonic.

For a student

The proof combines the solvability of the Dirichlet problem on balls with a maximum principle that only uses small spheres. This style of argument, comparing a function with the harmonic function that has the same boundary values, reappears in Perron's method and in the theory of subharmonic functions. Even weaker versions exist, where the mean value property is asked only for one sequence of radii tending to 00 at each point; the same proof works for them.
