Functions of a complex variable Definition
Complex differentiability
Definition
Let be an open set, let be a function, and let . The function is complex differentiable at if the limit exists in . Here runs through the nonzero complex numbers with . The number is the complex derivative of at . The limit means: for each there is such that for all such with .
Remarks
For example, is complex differentiable at each with , because . The number can go to from each direction in the plane. This makes the condition much stronger than real differentiability, see the conjugate is not holomorphic. If is complex differentiable at , then is continuous at . The Cauchy–Riemann equations describe complex differentiability with partial derivatives.
