Definition

Let Ω⊊ℂ\Omega \subsetneq \C be a simply connected domain and let a∈Ωa \in \Omega. Let 𝔻\mathbb{D} be the unit disc. By the Riemann mapping theorem there is a unique conformal map f ⁣:𝔻→Ωf \colon \mathbb{D} \to \Omega onto Ω\Omega with f(0)=af(0) = a and f′(0)>0f'(0) > 0. The conformal radius of Ω\Omega at aa is the number rad⁡(a,Ω)=f′(0)\operatorname{rad}(a, \Omega) = f'(0).

Remarks

Equivalently, rad⁡(a,Ω)=1/∣φ′(a)∣\operatorname{rad}(a, \Omega) = 1/\abs{\varphi'(a)} for any conformal map φ\varphi of Ω\Omega onto 𝔻\mathbb{D} with φ(a)=0\varphi(a) = 0. Example: let Ω=𝔻\Omega = \mathbb{D} and a∈𝔻a \in \mathbb{D}. The map f(w)=(w+a)/(1+aˉw)f(w) = (w + a)/(1 + \bar a w) sends 𝔻\mathbb{D} onto 𝔻\mathbb{D} with f(0)=af(0) = a and f′(0)=1−∣a∣2>0f'(0) = 1 - \abs{a}^2 > 0, so rad⁡(a,𝔻)=1−∣a∣2\operatorname{rad}(a, \mathbb{D}) = 1 - \abs{a}^2. Non-example: Ω=ℂ\Omega = \C is simply connected, but no conformal map of 𝔻\mathbb{D} onto ℂ\C exists, so the definition does not apply. With d=dist⁡(a,∂Ω)d = \operatorname{dist}(a, \partial\Omega) one has d≤rad⁡(a,Ω)≤4dd \le \operatorname{rad}(a, \Omega) \le 4d. The lower bound follows from the Schwarz lemma applied to f−1f^{-1} on the disc of centre aa and radius dd; the upper bound is the Koebe quarter theorem. The Green's function of Ω\Omega satisfies g(z,a)=−log⁡∣z−a∣+log⁡rad⁡(a,Ω)+o(1)g(z, a) = -\log\abs{z - a} + \log \operatorname{rad}(a, \Omega) + o(1) as z→az \to a. Under a conformal map FF of Ω\Omega onto Ω′\Omega', rad⁡(F(a),Ω′)=∣F′(a)∣rad⁡(a,Ω)\operatorname{rad}(F(a), \Omega') = \abs{F'(a)} \operatorname{rad}(a, \Omega).
