Builds on Univalent functionLaurent series

Statement

Let gg be an injective meromorphic function on {z∈ℂ:∣z∣>1}\set{z \in \C : \abs{z} > 1} with Laurent expansion g(z)=z+b0+∑n=1∞bnz−n,∣z∣>1.g(z) = z + b_0 + \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} b_n z^{-n}, \qquad \abs{z} > 1. Then ∑n=1∞n∣bn∣2≤1.\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} n \abs{b_n}^2 \le 1.

Remarks

For r>1r > 1, the image of the circle ∣z∣=r\abs{z} = r is a Jordan curve, and the bounded region ErE_r it encloses is the complement of g({∣z∣>r})g(\set{\abs{z} > r}). Green's formula gives the area of ErE_r as 12i∮wˉ dw\frac{1}{2i}\oint \bar{w}\, dw over this curve, which works out to π(r2−∑n≥1n∣bn∣2r−2n)\pi\bigl(r^2 - \sum_{n \ge 1} n \abs{b_n}^2 r^{-2n}\bigr). This area is nonnegative, and letting r→1r \to 1 gives the inequality. Equality holds exactly when the complement of g({∣z∣>1})g(\set{\abs{z} > 1}) has area 00. Example: g(z)=z+1/zg(z) = z + 1/z maps {∣z∣>1}\set{\abs{z} > 1} onto ℂ∖[−2,2]\C \setminus [-2, 2], and b1=1b_1 = 1 gives equality. In particular ∣b1∣≤1\abs{b_1} \le 1. Applied to g(z)=1/f(1/z2)g(z) = 1/\sqrt{f(1/z^2)} for ff in the class SS of normalised univalent functions, it gives Bieberbach's inequality ∣a2∣≤2\abs{a_2} \le 2.

Going deeper

For a student

The area theorem is the starting point of the coefficient theory of univalent functions. Through the substitution f↦1/f(1/z2)f \mapsto 1/\sqrt{f(1/z^2)}, it gives ∣a2∣≤2\abs{a_2} \le 2 for f∈Sf \in S, hence the Koebe quarter theorem and the distortion theorems. The Grunsky inequalities on the Grunsky matrix refine it to a statement about all the coefficients of log⁡g(z)−g(ζ)z−ζ\log\frac{g(z) - g(\zeta)}{z - \zeta}. The equality case shows that the bound ∣b1∣≤1\abs{b_1} \le 1 is attained exactly by maps onto the complement of a segment.
