Functions of a complex variable Definition
Order of a zero
Builds on Zero of a holomorphic functionHolomorphic functions are infinitely differentiable
Definition
Let be an open set, let be holomorphic on , and let . Assume that is not identically zero on any open disc with center . The order of at is the smallest integer with , where is the -th complex derivative of . If , this order is the order of the zero of . A zero of order is a simple zero. If is identically zero on an open disc with center , the order of at is .
Remarks
The order is if and only if near , where is holomorphic near and . The order exists because holomorphic functions are analytic: if all the derivatives at are , then the Taylor series is and near . For example, has a zero of order at and a simple zero at . The function has a zero of order at .
