Functions of a complex variable Singularities and residues Theorem
Rouché's theorem
Builds on Holomorphic functionOrder of a zeroArgument principle
Statement
Let and . Let and be holomorphic on an open set that contains the closed disc . Suppose that for each with . Then and have the same number of zeros in the open disc , each zero counted as many times as its order.
Remarks
The usual proof applies the argument principle to and to . For example, on we have , so has exactly one zero in the open unit disc, as has. For a polynomial with , compare with on a large circle; this gives zeros of and proves the fundamental theorem of algebra.
