Functions of a complex variable Complex integration Theorem
Hurwitz's theorem
Builds on Domain in the complex planeHolomorphic functionUniform limits of holomorphic functions are holomorphicOrder of a zero
Statement
Let be a domain in , that is, a connected open set. Let be a sequence of holomorphic functions on that converges uniformly on each compact subset of to a function . Suppose that is not identically zero on , and that has a zero of order at a point . Then for each sufficiently small there is an integer with the following property. For each , the function has exactly zeros in the disc , each counted as many times as its order.
Remarks
The limit is holomorphic on by the theorem on uniform limits. A consequence: if no has a zero in , then either has no zero in or is identically zero. A second consequence: if each is injective on , then is injective or constant. The radius must be small: has one zero in the unit disc, but its limit has none there.
