Functions of a complex variable Definition

Meromorphic function

Builds on Holomorphic functionPole

Definition

Let U⊆ℂU \subseteq \mathbb{C} be an open set. A function ff is meromorphic on UU if there is a set P⊆UP \subseteq U with these properties.

  1. PP has no accumulation point in UU.
  2. ff is holomorphic on U∖PU \setminus P.
  3. Each point of PP is a pole of ff.

Remarks

Rational functions p/qp/q, with polynomials pp and q≠0q \neq 0, are meromorphic on ℂ\mathbb{C}. So are tan⁡z\tan z, 1sin⁡z\frac{1}{\sin z} and the Gamma function. If UU is a domain, gg and hh are holomorphic on UU, and hh is not identically zero, then g/hg/h is meromorphic on UU. The meromorphic functions on a domain form a field. The function e1/ze^{1/z} is not meromorphic on ℂ\mathbb{C}, because its singularity at 00 is essential. The set PP can be infinite. It is countable, and each compact subset of UU contains only finitely many points of PP.
