Functions of a complex variable Definition
Isolated singularity
Builds on Holomorphic function
Definition
Let and let be a complex function. The point is an isolated singularity of if there is such that is defined and holomorphic on the punctured disc . The value of at , if there is one, plays no role.
Remarks
Each isolated singularity is of exactly one of three types: removable, a pole, or essential. For example, is an isolated singularity of , of and of . The point is not an isolated singularity of , because the poles accumulate at . It is not an isolated singularity of either, because is not holomorphic on any punctured disc around .
