Special functions Gamma function and related functions Theorem
Euler–Gauss limit formula
Builds on Gamma functionMeromorphic function
Statement
Let be the gamma function, extended to a meromorphic function on . For every , where .
Remarks
For , the quotient equals , by repeated integration by parts.
Since increases to , the dominated convergence theorem gives the limit .
For other , the functional equation moves the argument into the half-plane, and the quotients transform in the same way up to a factor that tends to .
Example: at the quotient is .
In Mathlib the statement is Complex.GammaSeq_tendsto_Gamma.

For a student
The limit makes sense for every allowed complex at once, so it can serve as a definition of the meromorphic gamma function. Taking reciprocals and rewriting turns it into the Weierstrass product. It is also the limit that appears in the proof of the Bohr–Mollerup theorem.
