Limit at infinity

Builds on Limit of a function

Definition

Let D⊆ℝD \subseteq \mathbb{R} be a set that is not bounded above, and let f ⁣:D→ℝf \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be a function. A real number LL is the limit of ff at +∞+\infty if for each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is MM with ∣f(x)−L∣<ε|f(x) - L| < \varepsilon for all x∈Dx \in D with x>Mx > M. The notation is lim⁡x→∞f(x)=L\lim_{x \to \infty} f(x) = L. The limit at −∞-\infty is defined in the same way, with x<Mx < M.

Remarks

A sequence is a function on ℕ\mathbb{N}. For sequences this definition gives the limit of a sequence. For example, lim⁡x→∞1/x=0\lim_{x \to \infty} 1/x = 0. Mathlib expresses x→∞x \to \infty by the filter Filter.atTop.

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 3 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
