Stirling's formula for the gamma function

Builds on Gamma functionComplex logarithmAsymptotic equivalence

Statement

Let Γ\Gamma be the gamma function, let Log⁡\operatorname{Log} be the principal complex logarithm, and for z∈ℂ∖(−∞,0]z \in \C \setminus (-\infty, 0] let zz−1/2=e(z−1/2)Log⁡zz^{z - 1/2} = e^{(z - 1/2)\operatorname{Log} z}. Fix δ\delta with 0<δ<π0 < \delta < \pi. Then, as ∣z∣→∞\abs{z} \to \infty with ∣arg⁡z∣≤π−δ\abs{\arg z} \le \pi - \delta, Γ(z)=2π  zz−1/2 e−z(1+O ⁣(1∣z∣)),\Gamma(z) = \sqrt{2\pi}\; z^{z - 1/2} \, e^{-z} \left(1 + O\!\left(\frac{1}{\abs{z}}\right)\right), where the constant in OO depends only on δ\delta. In particular Γ(z)\Gamma(z) is asymptotically equivalent to 2π zz−1/2e−z\sqrt{2\pi}\, z^{z - 1/2} e^{-z} in this sector.

Remarks

The proof starts from Binet's formula, which writes Log⁡Γ(z)−(z−12)Log⁡z+z−12ln⁡(2π)\operatorname{Log}\Gamma(z) - (z - \tfrac12)\operatorname{Log} z + z - \tfrac12\ln(2\pi) as an integral that is O(1/∣z∣)O(1/\abs{z}) for Re⁡z>0\operatorname{Re} z > 0; rotating the line of integration extends this bound to the whole sector. Another route is Laplace's method applied to Euler's integral Γ(x+1)=∫0∞exln⁡t−t dt\Gamma(x + 1) = \int_0^\infty e^{x \ln t - t}\,dt, whose integrand peaks at t=xt = x. For real x→∞x \to \infty it gives Γ(x+1)∼2πx (x/e)x\Gamma(x + 1) \sim \sqrt{2\pi x}\,(x/e)^x; at integers this is Stirling's formula for n!n!. The sector condition is needed: on the negative real axis Γ\Gamma has poles, so no such estimate holds near it. The full asymptotic series for Log⁡Γ(z)\operatorname{Log}\Gamma(z) is Stirling's series.

For a student

The complex form gives the decay of Γ\Gamma on vertical lines: for fixed real xx, ∣Γ(x+iy)∣∼2π ∣y∣x−1/2e−π∣y∣/2\abs{\Gamma(x + iy)} \sim \sqrt{2\pi}\,\abs{y}^{x - 1/2} e^{-\pi\abs{y}/2} as ∣y∣→∞\abs{y} \to \infty. This decay is what makes Mellin–Barnes integrals and the inverse Mellin transform converge, and it is used to estimate the Riemann zeta function through its functional equation. Dividing two instances gives Γ(x+a)/Γ(x)∼xa\Gamma(x + a)/\Gamma(x) \sim x^a as x→∞x \to \infty.
