Incomplete gamma function
Builds on Gamma functionImproper integral
Definition
Let and be real numbers.
- For and , the lower incomplete gamma function is
- For and any real , the upper incomplete gamma function is the improper integral
Remarks
For and , , the gamma function.
Example: for , and , and their sum is . Integration by parts gives .
Non-example of a valid argument: for the lower integral diverges at , so is not defined. The upper function is still defined: is the exponential integral.
The quotient is the regularised lower incomplete gamma function, the distribution function of the gamma distribution with shape and scale . Both functions extend to complex arguments: for , and by analytic continuation.
