Log-gamma function
Builds on Gamma functionHolomorphic functionNatural logarithm
Definition
Let be the gamma function, holomorphic and without zeros on , and let . The log-gamma function is the unique holomorphic function such that:
- for every ;
- is real for every real .
On it equals the real function , with the natural logarithm.
Remarks
Existence: is simply connected and has no zeros on , so has a holomorphic logarithm on . This logarithm is unique up to adding , and condition 2 fixes . Example: , which is real, and . Non-example: the composition with the principal logarithm satisfies condition 1 but is not continuous on . The reason is that the argument of grows without bound as , so crosses the negative real axis. The functional equation becomes on . Its derivative is the digamma function .
