Special functions Gamma function and related functions Theorem
Wielandt's theorem
Builds on Gamma functionHolomorphic function
Statement
Let and let be a holomorphic function such that:
- for every ;
- is bounded on the strip .
Then for every , where is the gamma function.
Remarks
The gamma function satisfies both conditions: the functional equation, and on the strip, by Euler's integral. For the proof, put ; it satisfies condition 1 and . The equation extends to a meromorphic function on , and the possible poles at are removable because , so is entire and bounded on . Then is entire, satisfies , and is bounded on that strip, so it is bounded on and constant by Liouville's theorem; since , and hence . Condition 2 cannot be dropped: satisfies condition 1 but is not a multiple of , and it is unbounded on the strip.

For a student
The theorem is a quick tool for proving identities: to show that a function equals , check the functional equation, boundedness on the strip , and . For example, the Euler–Gauss limit formula and the Legendre duplication formula can be proved this way. Compare with the Bohr–Mollerup theorem, which works on the real line.
