Special functions Gamma function and related functions Proposition

Gamma of one half

Builds on Gamma function

Statement

Let Γ\Gamma be the gamma function. Then Γ ⁣(12)=π.\Gamma\!\left(\tfrac12\right) = \sqrt{\pi}.

Remarks

By definition Γ(12)=∫0∞t−1/2e−t dt\Gamma(\tfrac12) = \int_0^\infty t^{-1/2} e^{-t}\, dt. The substitution t=x2t = x^2, dt=2x dxdt = 2x\,dx, turns this into 2∫0∞e−x2 dx2\int_0^\infty e^{-x^2}\,dx, and the Gaussian integral gives 2⋅π2=π2 \cdot \tfrac{\sqrt{\pi}}{2} = \sqrt{\pi}. Another proof uses the reflection formula at z=12z = \tfrac12: Γ(12)2=π/sin⁡(π2)=π\Gamma(\tfrac12)^2 = \pi/\sin(\tfrac{\pi}{2}) = \pi, and Γ(12)>0\Gamma(\tfrac12) > 0. With the functional equation it gives all half-integer values, for example Γ(32)=π2\Gamma(\tfrac32) = \tfrac{\sqrt\pi}{2} and Γ(−12)=−2π\Gamma(-\tfrac12) = -2\sqrt{\pi}. In Mathlib the statement is Complex.Gamma_one_half_eq.

For a student

The value is the gamma-function form of the Gaussian integral ∫−∞∞e−x2 dx=π\int_{-\infty}^\infty e^{-x^2}\,dx = \sqrt{\pi}. It is the reason π\pi appears in the volume of balls in odd dimension and in the normalisation of the normal and chi-squared distributions.
