Gamma function as Mellin transform of the exponential

Builds on Gamma functionMellin convergenceEuler integral for the gamma function

Example

Let f(x)=e−xf(x) = e^{-x} for x>0x > 0. Its Mellin transform is the gamma function: ℳf(s)=∫0∞xs−1e−x dx=Γ(s),Re⁡s>0.\mathcal{M}f(s) = \int_0^\infty x^{s-1} e^{-x} \, dx = \Gamma(s), \qquad \operatorname{Re} s > 0. The right side is Euler's integral, which is the usual definition of Γ\Gamma on the half-plane Re⁡s>0\operatorname{Re} s > 0.

Check of Mellin convergence: let σ=Re⁡s\sigma = \operatorname{Re} s. On (0,1](0, 1], xσ−1e−x≤xσ−1x^{\sigma - 1} e^{-x} \le x^{\sigma - 1}, which is integrable exactly when σ>0\sigma > 0. On [1,∞)[1, \infty), xσ−1e−x≤Cσe−x/2x^{\sigma - 1} e^{-x} \le C_\sigma e^{-x/2} for a constant CσC_\sigma, which is integrable for every σ\sigma. For σ≤0\sigma \le 0, xσ−1e−x≥e−1xσ−1x^{\sigma - 1} e^{-x} \ge e^{-1} x^{\sigma - 1} on (0,1](0, 1], which is not integrable. So ff is Mellin convergent exactly on the half-plane Re⁡s>0\operatorname{Re} s > 0.

Integration by parts gives Γ(s+1)=sΓ(s)\Gamma(s + 1) = s \Gamma(s), and Γ(1)=∫0∞e−x dx=1\Gamma(1) = \int_0^\infty e^{-x} \, dx = 1, so Γ(n+1)=n!\Gamma(n + 1) = n!. By the dilation rule, ∫0∞xs−1e−ax dx=a−sΓ(s)\int_0^\infty x^{s-1} e^{-ax} \, dx = a^{-s} \Gamma(s) for a>0a > 0. By the Mellin inversion theorem, for every c>0c > 0 and x>0x > 0, e−x=12πi∫c−i∞c+i∞Γ(s)x−s ds.e^{-x} = \frac{1}{2\pi i} \int_{c - i\infty}^{c + i\infty} \Gamma(s) x^{-s} \, ds.
