Euler integral for the gamma function
Builds on Gamma functionAbsolutely convergent improper integralHolomorphic functionIdentity theorem
Statement
Let , and for let .
- For every the integral converges absolutely.
- The function is holomorphic on .
- For real , , where is the gamma function.
So is the unique holomorphic extension of from to , and for all .
Remarks
Absolute convergence follows from with , which is the real integrand.
For holomorphy, the truncated integrals are entire in and converge to uniformly on each strip with , so the limit is holomorphic.
Uniqueness comes from the identity theorem, since has accumulation points in the connected set .
The integral diverges at when ; the extension of beyond uses the functional equation instead.
In Mathlib the statement is Complex.Gamma_eq_integral.
Going deeper
For a student
The integral is the gamma function's Mellin transform description: is the Mellin transform of . Many identities, such as the formula linking the beta function with , start from this integral and a change of variables. The integral alone only defines on the right half-plane; the meromorphic extension to comes from the functional equation.
