Special functions Gamma function and related functions Theorem
Log-convexity of the gamma function
Statement
Let be the gamma function on . Then is logarithmically convex: the function is convex on . Equivalently, for all and ,
Remarks
Write and apply Hölder's inequality with exponents and to Euler's integral; this gives the inequality.
A second proof: the second derivative is , so is even strictly convex.
Example: with , and the inequality says .
Log-convexity implies ordinary convexity of , so has a single minimum on , near .
In Mathlib the statement is Real.convexOn_log_Gamma.

For a student
Log-convexity is the property that singles out among all functions with and : this is the Bohr–Mollerup theorem. It gives inequalities such as Gautschi's bounds for ratios . The positivity of says that the digamma function is strictly increasing on .
