Poles of the gamma function

Builds on Gamma functionMeromorphic functionPoleResidue

Statement

Let Γ\Gamma be the gamma function, extended to a meromorphic function on ℂ\C. The poles of Γ\Gamma are exactly the points z=−nz = -n with n∈{0,1,2,…}n \in \set{0, 1, 2, \ldots}. Each of them is a simple pole, and the residue of Γ\Gamma at −n-n is Res⁡z=−nΓ(z)=(−1)nn!.\operatorname{Res}_{z = -n} \Gamma(z) = \frac{(-1)^n}{n!}.

Remarks

Iterating the functional equation gives Γ(z)=Γ(z+n+1)z(z+1)⋯(z+n)\Gamma(z) = \dfrac{\Gamma(z + n + 1)}{z (z + 1) \cdots (z + n)} near z=−nz = -n. The numerator is holomorphic at −n-n with value Γ(1)=1\Gamma(1) = 1, and only the factor z+nz + n of the denominator vanishes there, to first order. So the pole is simple, and the residue is 1/((−n)(−n+1)⋯(−1))=(−1)n/n!1/\big((-n)(-n + 1) \cdots (-1)\big) = (-1)^n/n!. Away from these points Γ\Gamma is holomorphic, see holomorphy of the gamma function. For example, near z=0z = 0 one has Γ(z)=1z−γ+O(z)\Gamma(z) = \frac{1}{z} - \gamma + O(z), where γ\gamma is the Euler–Mascheroni constant.

Going deeper

For a student

The residues explain contour integral formulas such as the Mellin–Barnes integrals, where closing the contour to the left picks up the poles of Γ\Gamma and produces power series. For instance, summing the residues of Γ(s)x−s\Gamma(s) x^{-s} at s=−ns = -n gives ∑n(−1)nxn/n!=e−x\sum_n (-1)^n x^n / n! = e^{-x}. The fact that the poles are simple and Γ\Gamma has no zeros makes 1/Γ1/\Gamma an entire function with simple zeros.
