Special functions Gamma function and related functions Theorem
The gamma function extends the factorial
Builds on Gamma functionIntegration by partsIntegral of exp(-x) over the half line
Statement
For each , the gamma function satisfies . For each natural number , .
Remarks
Integration by parts on , with and , gives the recursion in the limit.
The integral of gives . Induction on then gives .
Also , by the substitution and the Gaussian integral.
Mathlib states it as Real.Gamma_nat_eq_factorial.
History
Leonhard Euler announced the integral representation in a letter to Christian Goldbach, dated 8 January 1730.
