Real functions Proposition

Differentiable functions are continuous

Builds on Differentiable functionContinuity at a point

Statement

Let II be an open interval, let f ⁣:I→ℝf \colon I \to \mathbb{R}, and let a∈Ia \in I. If ff is differentiable at aa, then ff is continuous at aa.

Remarks

For x≠ax \ne a, write f(x)−f(a)=f(x)−f(a)x−a⋅(x−a)f(x) - f(a) = \frac{f(x) - f(a)}{x - a} \cdot (x - a). The first factor tends to f′(a)f'(a) and the second to 00. The converse fails. The absolute value is continuous but not differentiable at 00. The Weierstrass function is continuous and nowhere differentiable. Mathlib states it as HasDerivAt.continuousAt.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 6 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
