Real functions Differentiation Theorem

Quotient rule

Builds on Product ruleReciprocal rule

Statement

Let ff and gg be real functions on an open interval II, both differentiable at a∈Ia \in I, with g(a)≠0g(a) \ne 0. Then f/gf/g is differentiable at aa, and (fg)′(a)=f′(a)g(a)−f(a)g′(a)g(a)2.\left( \frac{f}{g} \right)'(a) = \frac{f'(a) g(a) - f(a) g'(a)}{g(a)^2}.

Remarks

Write f/g=f⋅(1/g)f/g = f \cdot (1/g), and use the product rule and the reciprocal rule. For example, it gives (tan⁡x)′=1/cos⁡2x(\tan x)' = 1/\cos^2 x. Mathlib states it as HasDerivAt.div.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 9 pages in order. The foundations come first.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or illustrates in: one example that shows the statement at work (0 of 1)
  • explanation L2 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
