Stein's lemma
Builds on Normal distributionExpected valueAbsolute continuityIntegration by partsMultivariate normal distribution
Statement
Let be a normal random variable with mean and variance . Let be absolutely continuous on every bounded interval, with derivative , and assume . Then and
Remarks
The normal density with mean and variance satisfies . So the left side is , and integration by parts moves the derivative onto . The integrability hypothesis is what controls the boundary terms at ; the careful proof writes as an integral of and uses Fubini's theorem.
Example: with and , the left side is . The right side is , as it should be.
The multivariate form is used in estimation. If is multivariate normal with mean and covariance , then for suitable .

For a student
The identity characterizes the normal distribution: if it holds for all bounded smooth , then is normal with mean and variance . This is the starting point of Stein's method for proving normal approximations. In decision theory, the multivariate form gives Stein's unbiased risk estimate and through it the risk of the James–Stein estimator.
