Removable singularity

Builds on Isolated singularityHolomorphic function

Definition

Let cc be an isolated singularity of ff, so that ff is holomorphic on 0<∣z−c∣<r0 < |z - c| < r for some r>0r > 0. The singularity cc is removable if there is a function gg that is holomorphic on the disc ∣z−c∣<r|z - c| < r with g(z)=f(z)g(z) = f(z) for each zz with 0<∣z−c∣<r0 < |z - c| < r.

Remarks

The standard example is f(z)=sin⁡zzf(z) = \frac{\sin z}{z} at 00. With g(0)=1g(0) = 1, the function gg is the sum of 1−z23!+z45!−⋯1 - \frac{z^2}{3!} + \frac{z^4}{5!} - \cdots, which is holomorphic. The singularity is removable if and only if the principal part of ff at cc is 00. Riemann's theorem says that the singularity is removable if ff is bounded near cc.

Reading path

To understand this page from the ground up, read these 13 pages in order. The foundations come first.

Show the path as a graph
Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
