Definition

Let 𝔻={ζ∈ℂ:∣ζ∣<1}\mathbb{D} = \set{\zeta \in \C : \abs{\zeta} < 1} and let ρ\rho be the Poincaré distance on 𝔻\mathbb{D}, ρ(a,b)=tanh⁡−1∣a−b1−aˉb∣.\rho(a, b) = \tanh^{-1} \abs{\frac{a - b}{1 - \bar a b}} . Let XX be a connected complex manifold and p,q∈Xp, q \in X. A holomorphic chain from pp to qq consists of points p=p0,p1,…,pk=qp = p_0, p_1, \dots, p_k = q of XX, points a1,b1,…,ak,bka_1, b_1, \dots, a_k, b_k of 𝔻\mathbb{D}, and holomorphic maps f1,…,fk ⁣:𝔻→Xf_1, \dots, f_k \colon \mathbb{D} \to X with fj(aj)=pj−1f_j(a_j) = p_{j-1} and fj(bj)=pjf_j(b_j) = p_j. The Kobayashi pseudodistance of XX is kX(p,q)=inf⁡∑j=1kρ(aj,bj),k_X(p, q) = \inf \sum_{j=1}^k \rho(a_j, b_j), the infimum over all holomorphic chains from pp to qq.

Remarks

Holomorphic chains exist because XX is connected. The function kXk_X is a pseudodistance: it is symmetric, satisfies the triangle inequality and vanishes on the diagonal, but it may vanish for distinct points. Some authors use 2ρ2\rho, the distance of curvature −1-1, which doubles kXk_X. The infinitesimal form is the Kobayashi–Royden pseudometric FX(p,v)=inf⁡{1/R:there is f ⁣:𝔻→X holomorphic with f(0)=p, f′(0)=Rv}F_X(p, v) = \inf\set{1/R : \text{there is } f \colon \mathbb{D} \to X \text{ holomorphic with } f(0) = p,\ f'(0) = R v} for vv tangent at pp; by a theorem of Royden, kXk_X is the integrated form of FXF_X. Distance-decreasing property: if g ⁣:X→Yg \colon X \to Y is holomorphic, then kY(g(p),g(q))≤kX(p,q)k_Y(g(p), g(q)) \le k_X(p, q), because gg maps holomorphic chains to holomorphic chains. Example: k𝔻=ρk_{\mathbb{D}} = \rho; the inequality k𝔻≤ρk_{\mathbb{D}} \le \rho comes from the chain with f=id⁡f = \id, and k𝔻≥ρk_{\mathbb{D}} \ge \rho comes from the Schwarz–Pick theorem. Non-example of a distance: kℂ≡0k_\C \equiv 0; for p≠qp \ne q in ℂ\C and R>1R > 1, the map f(ζ)=p+Rζ(q−p)f(\zeta) = p + R \zeta (q - p) sends 00 to pp and 1/R1/R to qq, so kℂ(p,q)≤ρ(0,1/R)→0k_\C(p, q) \le \rho(0, 1/R) \to 0 as R→∞R \to \infty.
