Definition
The Riemann sphere, or extended complex plane, is the set , where is the set of complex numbers and is one new point. Its topology is as follows. A set is open if the following two conditions hold. First, is open in the complex plane. Second, in the case , also contains the set for some . Let and . The stereographic projection is for points other than , and . The map is a homeomorphism, so is a sphere as a topological space.
Remarks
A sequence of complex numbers tends to in exactly when . Some arithmetic extends to : for , and and for , but the expressions , , and stay undefined. With the value at each pole, a meromorphic function on an open set becomes a continuous map from to . The Riemann sphere is a compact Riemann surface, with the two charts near points of and near .
