Several complex variables and analytic spaces Holomorphic functions of several variables Theorem
Identity theorem in several variables
Builds on Holomorphic function of several variablesIdentity theorem
Statement
Let be a domain, that is, a nonempty connected open set. Let and be holomorphic functions on . If on a nonempty open subset of , then on all of .
Remarks
Put and let be the set of points of near which vanishes identically. The set is open by definition and nonempty by hypothesis. It is also closed in . At a limit point of , all partial derivatives of vanish by continuity, so the power series of at is zero and near . Since is connected, . The one-variable condition "agreement on a set with a limit point" is not enough when : vanishes on the whole line but is not zero. Connectedness is needed. Let in , or its product with . The function equal to on the first piece and on the second is holomorphic and vanishes on an open set without being zero.
Going deeper
For a student
This is the several-variable form of the identity theorem. The proof uses only the local power series expansion and connectedness, exactly as in one variable. What changes is the size of the set needed. Zero sets of holomorphic functions in , , are never isolated points, so agreement on a discrete set or even on a complex hypersurface says little. It is enough that and agree on a set that is not contained in any proper analytic subset of . An example of such a set is a nonempty open subset of , when meets . The theorem underlies uniqueness of analytic continuation in several variables.
