Definition

Let XX be a Riemann surface and let U⊆XU \subseteq X be an open set. A function u ⁣:U→ℝu \colon U \to \R is harmonic if for every holomorphic chart ϕ ⁣:V→ϕ(V)⊆ℂ\phi \colon V \to \phi(V) \subseteq \C of XX, the function u∘ϕ−1u \circ \phi^{-1} is harmonic on the open set ϕ(U∩V)\phi(U \cap V).

Remarks

It suffices to check the condition for the charts of one atlas. Indeed, transition maps are holomorphic, and harmonicity is preserved by holomorphic maps. Equivalently, uu is harmonic if each point of UU has a neighbourhood on which u=Re⁡fu = \operatorname{Re} f for a holomorphic function ff. Example: on X=ℂ∖{0}X = \C \setminus \set{0} with the chart z↦zz \mapsto z, the function u(z)=log⁡∣z∣u(z) = \log\abs{z} is harmonic, since Δlog⁡∣z∣=0\Delta \log\abs{z} = 0 there. Non-example: u(z)=∣z∣2u(z) = \abs{z}^2 on X=ℂX = \C is not harmonic, since in the chart z↦zz \mapsto z its Laplacian is 44. On the Riemann sphere, or on any compact Riemann surface, the maximum principle forces each harmonic function on the whole surface to be constant. The Laplacian of uu depends on the chart, but the condition Δ(u∘ϕ−1)=0\Delta(u \circ \phi^{-1}) = 0 does not; in coordinate-free form it reads ∂∂ˉu=0\partial \bar\partial u = 0. Subharmonic and superharmonic functions on XX are defined in the same way, chart by chart.
