Statement
Let be open sets and let be a holomorphic function. Let be a harmonic function. Then is harmonic on . In particular, let be a conformal map of onto . Then is harmonic on if and only if is harmonic on .
Remarks
Proof idea: near a point , harmonic conjugates exist locally, so for a holomorphic on a disc around . Then near , and is holomorphic. A direct computation gives , where is the Laplacian. Example: is harmonic on , and with one gets , again harmonic. Holomorphy of is needed: for the smooth map and , the function has Laplacian . The statement also holds for antiholomorphic , because equals with , which is harmonic.
Going deeper
For a student
This is the basis of conformal methods in planar potential theory. With the Riemann mapping theorem, the Dirichlet problem on a simply connected domain reduces to the disc, where the Poisson integral solves it. The same invariance makes harmonic measure and Green's functions conformally invariant. It also shows that harmonicity makes sense on a Riemann surface, since the transition maps between charts are holomorphic.
