Statement
Let be an open set and let be a harmonic function. Let be an open disc with . Then there is a holomorphic function with on . Its imaginary part is a harmonic conjugate of on , and it is unique up to an additive real constant.
Remarks
Proof idea: write and set . The equation and the symmetry are exactly the Cauchy–Riemann equations for , so is holomorphic on . A holomorphic function on a disc has a primitive , and gives . So is a real constant on , and works. The same proof works on every simply connected domain in place of the disc. The result is local: on the function is harmonic. On each disc that avoids it has the conjugate for a continuous branch of the argument. It has no harmonic conjugate on all of , because no continuous argument exists on a circle around .
Going deeper
For a student
The theorem lets one transfer results from complex analysis to planar harmonic functions. For example, the mean value property and the maximum principle for follow from those for a local holomorphic with . Globally, a harmonic conjugate exists exactly when the period vanishes on each closed curve in . These periods are the obstruction on multiply connected domains, as the example shows.
