Circle average

Builds on CircleLebesgue integralMean value property

Definition

Let EE be ℝ\R or ℂ\C, let c∈ℂc \in \C and let r≥0r \ge 0. Let ff be a function with values in EE, defined at least on the circle {z∈ℂ:∣z−c∣=r}\set{z \in \C : \abs{z - c} = r}. Assume that θ↦f(c+reiθ)\theta \mapsto f(c + r e^{i\theta}) is Lebesgue integrable on [0,2π][0, 2\pi]. The circle average of ff on the circle of centre cc and radius rr is M(f;c,r)=12π∫02πf(c+reiθ) dθ.M(f; c, r) = \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_0^{2\pi} f(c + r e^{i\theta}) \, d\theta.

Remarks

Example: let f(z)=zf(z) = z, with c∈ℂc \in \C and r>0r > 0. Then M(f;c,r)=c+r2π∫02πeiθ dθ=cM(f; c, r) = c + \frac{r}{2\pi} \int_0^{2\pi} e^{i\theta} \, d\theta = c, since the integral of eiθe^{i\theta} over a full period is 00. Non-example: let f(z)=1/∣z−1∣f(z) = 1/\abs{z - 1} on ℂ∖{1}\C \setminus \set{1}, with c=0c = 0 and r=1r = 1. Then f(eiθ)=1/(2∣sin⁡(θ/2)∣)f(e^{i\theta}) = 1/(2\abs{\sin(\theta/2)}) for 0<θ<2π0 < \theta < 2\pi, which is not integrable near θ=0\theta = 0, so the circle average is not defined. For r=0r = 0 the circle average is f(c)f(c). The mean value property says that M(u;c,r)=u(c)M(u; c, r) = u(c) when uu is harmonic on a neighbourhood of the closed disc of centre cc and radius rr. For r>0r > 0, M(f;c,r)M(f; c, r) is the integral of ff against arc length on the circle, divided by the length 2πr2\pi r.
