Statement

Let XX and YY be real Banach spaces, let U⊆XU \subseteq X be open, and let f ⁣:U→ℝf \colon U \to \R and g ⁣:U→Yg \colon U \to Y be continuously Fréchet differentiable. Let x0∈Ux_0 \in U with g(x0)=0g(x_0) = 0, and suppose that x0x_0 is a local extremum of the restriction of ff to M={x∈U:g(x)=0}M = \set{x \in U : g(x) = 0}. Suppose that the derivative Dg(x0) ⁣:X→YDg(x_0) \colon X \to Y is surjective. Then there is a unique continuous linear functional λ∈Y∗\lambda \in Y^*, an element of the dual space of YY, such that Df(x0)=λ∘Dg(x0).Df(x_0) = \lambda \circ Dg(x_0).

Remarks

Let h∈ker⁡Dg(x0)h \in \ker Dg(x_0). By Lyusternik's theorem there is a curve t↦x0+th+r(t)t \mapsto x_0 + th + r(t) in MM with r(t)=o(t)r(t) = o(t), and t↦f(x0+th+r(t))t \mapsto f(x_0 + th + r(t)) has a local extremum at t=0t = 0, so Df(x0)h=0Df(x_0) h = 0. Thus Df(x0)Df(x_0) vanishes on ker⁡Dg(x0)\ker Dg(x_0), and λ(Dg(x0)h)=Df(x0)h\lambda(Dg(x_0) h) = Df(x_0) h is a well defined linear map on YY. It is continuous by the open mapping theorem, and it is unique because Dg(x0)Dg(x_0) is onto.

For X=ℝnX = \R^n and Y=ℝmY = \R^m, the functional λ\lambda is a vector (λ1,…,λm)(\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_m), and the result is the Lagrange multiplier theorem.

Example: an isoperimetric problem minimises J(y)=∫abL(x,y,y′) dxJ(y) = \int_a^b L(x, y, y') \, dx subject to K(y)=∫abG(x,y,y′) dx=ℓK(y) = \int_a^b G(x, y, y') \, dx = \ell and fixed ends. Here Y=ℝY = \R, and the result gives a number λ\lambda with δJ(y0;η)=λ δK(y0;η)\delta J(y_0; \eta) = \lambda \, \delta K(y_0; \eta) for all admissible variations η\eta.

Surjectivity is needed. For X=ℝ2X = \R^2, Y=ℝY = \R, f(x1,x2)=x1f(x_1, x_2) = x_1 and g(x1,x2)=x22−x13g(x_1, x_2) = x_2^2 - x_1^3, the point 00 minimises ff on MM, since x1≥0x_1 \ge 0 on MM. But Dg(0)=0Dg(0) = 0, so λ∘Dg(0)=0≠Df(0)\lambda \circ Dg(0) = 0 \ne Df(0) for every λ\lambda.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the abstract form of the multiplier rule used for constrained problems in the calculus of variations and in optimal control. With Y=ℝY = \R it gives Euler's multiplier rule for isoperimetric problems, and with YY a function space it handles pointwise constraints. The onto condition on Dg(x0)Dg(x_0) is the infinite-dimensional constraint qualification; without it the multiplier may not exist, as the example shows.
