Log-modulus of a holomorphic function is subharmonic
Builds on Holomorphic functionSubharmonic functionHarmonic functionThe real part of a holomorphic function is harmonicOpen setConvex functions of subharmonic functions
Statement
Let be an open set and let be holomorphic on , not identically zero on any connected component of . Then the function , with where , is subharmonic on . Moreover is harmonic on the open set .
Remarks
Proof idea: let be a point with . On a small disc about there is a holomorphic with , so there. The real part of a holomorphic function is harmonic, so is harmonic near . At a zero of , , and is at most any mean of , so the sub-mean inequality holds at . The function is continuous as a map into , so it is upper semicontinuous.
Example: for , is harmonic off and equals at . Its mean over the circle of radius about is . Composing with the convex increasing function shows that is subharmonic for every , by convex functions of subharmonic functions. The function is not harmonic on all of when has zeros. Its Laplacian in the sense of distributions is , where runs over the zeros of and is the multiplicity of .
Going deeper
For a student
This is the main bridge from complex analysis to potential theory. Applied to , the maximum principle for subharmonic functions gives the maximum modulus principle, and the convexity results for subharmonic functions give Hadamard's three-circle theorem. Jensen's formula is the mean value formula for , with the zeros of as the correction term.
