Statement

Let n≥2n \ge 2 and let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be an open set.

  1. Let uu be subharmonic on Ω\Omega and let φ ⁣:ℝ→ℝ\varphi \colon \R \to \R be convex and increasing. Put φ(−∞)=lim⁡t→−∞φ(t)∈[−∞,∞)\varphi(-\infty) = \lim_{t \to -\infty} \varphi(t) \in [-\infty, \infty). Then φ∘u\varphi \circ u is subharmonic on Ω\Omega.
  2. Let hh be harmonic on Ω\Omega and let φ ⁣:ℝ→ℝ\varphi \colon \R \to \R be convex. Then φ∘h\varphi \circ h is subharmonic on Ω\Omega.

Remarks

Proof idea: a convex function on ℝ\R is continuous, and an increasing continuous function preserves upper semicontinuity. For the sub-mean inequality on a sphere with normalised measure σ\sigma, monotonicity and Jensen's inequality give φ(u(a))≤φ(∫u dσ)≤∫φ(u) dσ.\varphi(u(a)) \le \varphi\Big(\int u \, d\sigma\Big) \le \int \varphi(u) \, d\sigma. In part 2 the first step is an equality, by the mean value property of hh, so monotonicity of φ\varphi is not needed. If ∫u dσ=−∞\int u \, d\sigma = -\infty, then u(a)=−∞u(a) = -\infty and φ(u(a))=inf⁡φ\varphi(u(a)) = \inf \varphi, which is below every value of φ∘u\varphi \circ u.

Examples: if uu is subharmonic, so are eue^{u} and max⁡(u,0)\max(u, 0); if hh is harmonic, so are ∣h∣\abs{h} and h2h^2. Monotonicity is needed in part 1: u(x)=∣x∣2u(x) = \abs{x}^2 is subharmonic and φ(t)=−t\varphi(t) = -t is convex, but φ∘u=−∣x∣2\varphi \circ u = -\abs{x}^2 is not subharmonic.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the multi-dimensional analogue of the fact that an increasing convex function of a convex function is convex. Combined with the subharmonicity of log⁡∣f∣\log\abs{f} for holomorphic ff, it shows that ∣f∣p\abs{f}^p is subharmonic for all p>0p > 0, which is the starting point of the theory of Hardy spaces. It also shows that log⁡u\log u need not be subharmonic when uu is, since log⁡\log is concave; functions with log⁡u\log u subharmonic form the smaller class of log-subharmonic functions.
