Band-limited function
Definition
Let , and let be its Fourier transform, normalized so that for integrable . Let . The function is band-limited with bandwidth if for almost every with . It is band-limited if it is band-limited with some bandwidth .
Remarks
If is band-limited with bandwidth , then lies in , and agrees almost everywhere with the continuous function ; one always uses this continuous representative.
Example: , with , lies in , and . So is the indicator of , and is band-limited with bandwidth .
Non-example: has , which is positive everywhere, so is not band-limited.
By the Paley–Wiener theorem, the band-limited functions with bandwidth are exactly the restrictions to of certain entire functions. These are the entire functions of exponential type at most that are square-integrable on . In particular a nonzero band-limited function cannot vanish on an interval. The same definition is used for tempered distributions, with the condition that the support of the distribution lies in . In this wider sense is band-limited, though not in .
